Pardubice Area
Part of the so-called golden lands, this is the most fertile area of the Elbe plains and a landscape as flat as a pancake – except for one prominent peak - Mount Kunětická. From the castle at the top you can view the entire area including the surrounding meadows, deciduous forests and old canals.
Wherever there are irrigation canals, there inevitably must be ponds and lakes, though those that have survived in the Pardubice District are meagre remnants of what was once an extensive medieval system. In their heyday there were up to 265 lakes and over 30km of manmade irrigation channels. You can see what they may have looked like while walking through nature reserves around Bohdanečský Lake and Matka Lake, which both date from those times. On your wanderings through the Pardubice District you mustn’t miss the chance to taste the local gingerbread. It comes in various shapes and sizes, from flat gingerbread men to intricately decorated gingerbread cottages. In specialist shops you will discover gingerbread made for special occasions such as Easter, Valentine’s Day and Christmas.
Chateau and stud farm in Kladruby nad Labem – Since 1579, when Emperor Rudolf II granted the Kladruby stud farm imperial court status, white and black starokladrubský horses have been shipped from here to royal courts around the world. Among other things, visitors can tour the stables and take a carriage ride.
Lázně Bohdaneč – A mud spa near Pardubice, where next to colonnades housing shops you’ll also find a set of Functionalist buildings including a spa pavilion designed by architect, J. Gočár. There’s a golf course nearby.
Castle at Kunětická hora – This Late Gothic pile with a viewing tower, is one of the highlights of the Pardubice District. Within the grounds you can see the remnants of a palace, the Knight’s Hall, a dungeon, cellars and an archaeological exhibition.
