Silesia – Těšín region

A region in the northeast tip of the Czech Republic, offering a relaxing spa vacation or an active trip to Těšínské Beskydy. The region’s borders have shifted many times in history, which has caused the intermingling of three distinct cultures – Czech, Polish, and Slovakian. All of the region’s ethnic communities have maintained their distinct dialects, varied folklore traditions, specific cuisine, and beautiful festivals, which are a true way to discover the spirit of Těšínské Slezsko.

The festivals are indeed in abundance, be it in one of the historic mining towns – Bohumín, Orlová, Karviná, or Havířov, Jablunkov or Český Těšín, divided from the Polish Cieszyn only by the quiet stream of the Olše River, or the industrial town of Třinec, surrounded by the peaks of Těšínské Beskydy. The mountain range hides attractive ski resorts, terrain suitable for paragliding and hang-gliding, or mountain biking. Treks through Těšínské Slezsko will take you to a number of unique wooden churches.

  • Albrechtice – a Baroque Church of SS Peter and Paul built of massive wooden beams, lined by fir planks, with a shingled roof.
  • Guty – a Renaissance Church of the Body of Christ, the most important monument of rustic sacral architecture in the Beskydy foothills, built in 1563.
  • Petřvald – technical museum in the former rectory near the temple of St. Henry, containing an exhibition on the history of tram transport in Ostrava and Karviná, The Magical World of Trams; and an exhibition on mining tradition in the Těšín region, documenting the history of coal mining in the Karviná section of the Ostravsko-karvinský mining district.
  • Havířov – the newest town in the Czech Republic, unique due to its uniform 1950’s architectural style. The town center, built in Social Realist style, is a historic urban preserve.
  • Kotulova dřevěnka – a rustic log house from 1781, the last remaining example of the original buildings in the town of Havířov. The house holds an exhibition on housing in the central part of Těšínské Slezsko in the late 19th and early 20th century.
  • Karviná – the historic town center is dominated by the Empire-style château of Fryštát, the only one of the three splendid châteaux which used to grace the town until the mid-20th century. Period interiors evoking the ambience of an aristocratic residence are complemented by the only regional branch of the Prague National Gallery in the Czech Republic holding the works of famous Czech painters of the 19th century. The vast château gardens offer relaxing walks and nostalgic rides in historical coaches, as well as children’s bike trails.
  • Church of St. Peter of Alcantara – built in 1736, the church is an architectural curiosity, often called the “Czech Pisa”. In the 20th century, the ground underneath the church dropped by 36 meters, inclining the church by 7 degrees off the vertical axis.
  • Spa Darkov – the spa with iodine-bromine springs, established in 1867, is one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. Thanks to the excellent quality of its healing springs, as well as the comprehensive professional rehabilitation treatment offered, the spa has achieved excellent results in treating malfunctions of the motor organs, post-traumatic and post-surgical conditions, diseases of the nervous and circulatory systems, and is much sought after even by patients from abroad. The pleasant atmosphere is complemented by beautiful parks with spa buildings, some of which have been declared a part of the cultural heritage. Visitors may also enjoy the offer of various complementary services within the wellness programs, offered in packages designed for various target groups.
  • Chotěbuz – a 12-meter-high watchtower, the only remains of the original Gothic castle from the 13th/14th century. The most important archeological site of the region is the Podobora fortified settlement, a cultural heritage monument where excavations are still under way. Simultaneously, an archeological park is being constructed, designed to illustrate the everyday life in an early medieval Slavic settlement.
  • Třinec – an industrial town surrounded by the picturesque peaks of Moravskoslezské and Slezské Beskydy (altitudes around 1,000 meters). The peak of Javorový, with a popular ski slope, is connected to the town of Oldřichovice by a a chair-lift.
  • Ropice – a set of architectural monuments with the rectory Church of the Assumption, built in 1806. The Beskydy Golf Club recently opened a magnificent 18-hole course here.
  • Těrlicko a Žermanice Dam – popular vacation spots, water sports grounds, fishing sites, boarding houses, campsites, caravan sites, boat rentals. The artificial lake holds international water-skiing and scuba-diving contests. Thanks to its facilities and abundance of fish, the lake is a much sought-after fishing spot.
