Northern Moravia and Silesia
The tourist region of Northern Moravia and Silesia, with the city of Ostrava, the third largest in the Czech Republic, can be found in the north-east of the country. It can best be described by the slogan “The Region of Contrasts and Opportunities.” Among its many attractions, the region offers beautiful natural sights, numerous cultural, architectural, devotional and technological monuments, as well as a number of sports facilities and relaxation centers. The region also entices visitors with the hospitality and openness of its people, as well as with its carefully maintained folklore traditions. The region’s area and population make it the largest and most varied tourist area in the country.
The region offers its visitors a wide range of activities. Relaxation and leisure are possible thanks to numerous cable parks, and a dense network of cycling routes and paths, to which bikers may travel by shuttle biking buses. The pristine state of the landscape, as well as the presence of a number of curative mineral water springs and iodine-bromine waters of marine origin have led to the establishment of popular spas, such as Jeseník (Priessnitz Spa), Velké Losiny, Karlova Studánka, Klímkovice u Ostravy, and Darkov u Karviné. Newly constructed spa premises offer popular wellness programs. The excellent quality of the region’s golf courses (Prosper golf Čeladná, Ropice, Kravaře, Šilheřovice) will satisfy even the most demanding players, as well as those who wish to try out golfing for the first time.
North Moravia and Silesia contain the highest number of natural preserves and natural parks in the Czech Republic. The mountains of Beskydy and Jeseníky offer pure mountain air and a well-preserved, almost virgin landscape. Poodří is the youngest natural preserve in the country.
The mountain landscape of Beskydy and Jeseníky is ideal for hiking and climbing. Its mountain skiing resorts, comfortable hotels, lodges, downhill ski slopes, cross country skiing trails, snowboarding and sledding slopes make it an ideal winter tourist destination. The well-known skiing resorts of Jeseníky, such as Ovčárna pod Pradědem, Malá Morávka, and Červenohorské sedlo, as well as those in Beskydy (Pustevny, Bílá, Grúň, Zlatník, Soláň, Velké Karlovice), are extremely popular. The foothills contain numerous excellent cross country skiing trails.
The region is abundant in sacral monuments. Visitors will be delighted by the unique collection of ancient wooden churches and other wooden structures, which are typical for the region. Its botanical gardens are also well worth visiting, especially Arboretum Nový Dvůr near Opava: a well-known botanical garden with rare plant species from five continents. The long tradition of old crafts is documented in numerous museums. The castles of Hukvaldy, Sovinec, Starý Jičín, and Štramberská trúba, as well as the chateaus of Hradec nad Moravicí, Raduň, Fryštát v Karviné, and Bruntál offer unique architectural styles and well-maintained gardens.
