Beskydy Mountains – Walachian region

Endless forests, sunny meadows, blue mountains, folk architecture, hillsides covered with blueberry and juniper bushes: Such is the spirit of Beskydy and Wallachia, a distinctive region in the northeast of the Czech Republic. The harmonic natural beauties mix with a wide range of leisure activities offered for every season: A wide network of hiking and cycling trails, indoor swimming pools, summer water parks, riding halls, rope centers, hang-gliding and paragliding locations, and golf courses.

Winter sports fans love Beskydy for the excellent snow conditions: The ski slopes of Pustevny, Bílá, Grůň, Malenovice, Morávka, Lysá hora, Soláň or Velké Karlovice are big names among lovers of skiing. The Wallachian Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is also very famous, as well as a number of locations in the Beskydy foothills: The town of Kopřivnice with a museum of historic vehicles from the Tatra factory; the Millinery Museum in Nový Jičín; the glassworks in Karolinka; the picturesque town of Štramberk, or the vast ruins of Hukvaldy Castle. The region also offers countless culinary specialties, which should always be washed down with genuine Wallachian plum brandy.

  • Vizovice – a town famous for its distilled liquor production and the manufacture of traditional decorative Vizovice pastries. The Late Baroque château, holding an exhibition on the history of plum brandy distillation, is surrounded by French and English gardens, with numerous sculptures and lakes. The local distillery offers guided tours.
  • Lukov – a partially restored ruin of a large Romanesque-Gothic castle. Large courtyard, bridge over a wide moat, remains of a palace, towers and surrounding ramparts.
  • Rožnov pod Radhoštěm – a town at the foot of the hallowed Radhošť Mountain. A unique open-air museum of Wallachian culture, the largest of its kind in Central Europe, presenting traditional customs and crafts of the Wallachian nation.

  • Frenštát pod Radhoštěm – a town in the foothills of Beskydy and an important sports and tourism center. Downhill skiing and slalom slopes, cross-country skiing trails, ski jump facilities, a summer water park, and a chair lift from Ráztoka to Pustevny. A newly-opened museum.
  • Hukvaldy – vast ruins of a medieval castle. The tower offers a beautiful view of the Radhošťské and Moravskoslezské Beskydy mountain ridges and the foothill settlements. The amphitheater of Hukvaldy Castle holds an annual music festival, Janáčkovy Hukvaldy. The town of the same name houses the family home of composer Leoš Janáček, and a museum of historical coaches.
  • Štramberk – the town, dominated by a 40-meter-high tower [Trúba], refashioned as a lookout tower, contains a number of houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, examples of original Beskydy architecture, a museum dedicated to painter and illustrator Zdenek Burian, and the Štramberk town brewery.
  • Kopřivnice – an industrial town famous for its automobile production. The Tatra Technical Museum holds a large collection of passenger and freight vehicles from the Tatra factory, including the legendary Tatra trucks that participated in the famous Paris-Dakar Rally. The museum also holds an exhibition dedicated to a local native, athlete Emil Zátopek, and his wife Dana. The Šustal Villa holds an exhibition of the works of painter Zdenek Burian. An interesting spiral view tower can be found in the nearby Bílá hora (altitude 557 meters).
  • Nový Jičín – a picturesque historic town with a rectangular square with arcades and a Renaissance building of the Old Post. The Renaissance château houses a unique exhibition documenting the history of millinery production, partially depicted as a series of scenic exhibitions.
  • Lysá hora – the highest peak of Beskydy (1,323 meters) offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. A symbol of tourism in Beskydy, the mountain houses several memorials and commemorative plaques. A stone memorial of Ivančena commemorates members of the Boy Scout movement, tortured to death during the Second World War.
  • Čeladná – Prosper Golf: The largest sports and recreational resort in Central Europe, with two 18-hole golf courses; the Prosper Horse Ranch, a modern riding school; the Beskydy Rehabilitation Center with a Polarium, the first to offer whole-body cold therapy in the Czech Republic.

  • Ostravice – a settlement underneath the Šance dam, and a starting point of the trek to Lysá hora, the highest peak of Moravskoslezské Beskydy (1,323 meters). The so-called Devil’s Island in the Hamrovice district houses Petr Bezruč’s log cabin from 1935, now a museum dedicated to the famous poet.
  • Bílá – a popular destination both in summer and winter. A wide network of tourist trails running along mountain ridges, through mountain stream valleys and calm corners. SKI Vítkovice Bílá – a popular ski resort with the first four-chair lift in Beskydy.
