Central Bohemia - northeast – Elbe Lowlands
Although the River Elbe acts as the main axis and the water traffic artery of the region, Polari is not just a water district. Flat, calm and serene planes stretch along both river banks, an ideal landscape for long hikes or bicycle trips.
Picturesque towns and villages have grown along the Elbe like shiny and lustrous beads threaded on a string – the spa town of Poděbrady, the town of Nymburk with its preserved brick fortification, the ancient twin towns of Brandýs nad Labem and Stará Boleslav, a popular destination of the Renaissance scholars and friends of Emperor Rudolph II, or the historic town of Mělník. Like the river, life is tranquil and peaceful here, rippled only by the frequent local festivals and celebrations. Naturally, every celebration provides everyone with the perfect opportunity to try the local wines, and perhaps even taste the legendary Burgundy varieties brought to the Mělník region by the Emperor Charles IV. But you can also dive into the rocky and woody landscape of the Kokořín region. Or would you instead prefer the Probošt lakes or sand pits nearby Lhota and Mlékojedy?
- Kokořín Castle – a romantic, renovated medieval castle with observation tower, which dominates the protected landscape area of Kokořínsko. The castle is surrounded by interesting rocky formations, caves and rock cities, which make the area a popular tourist destination.
- Chateau Benátky nad Jizerou – a set of Renaissance and Baroque chateau buildings decorated with sculptures by M. B. Braun. A museum, a collection of Aboriginal art and the museum of toys.
- Stará Boleslav – a treasury of cultural monuments and historical buildings and a town connected with the martyrdom of St. Wenceslas. The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary displays the renowned Palladium of Bohemia.
- Dřevčice – a massive two-wing Gothic fortress enclosed in a thick wall with a Baroque gateway. The interior of the former granary, period interiors styled as a medieval tavern.
- Čertovy hlavy – or Devils Heads, comprises monumental rock sculptures carved into the sandstone cliffs in the late 19th century by the sculptor V. Levý. The most interesting sculptures are connected by a hiking trail.
- Mělník – the center of the wine-growing region of Mělnicko. The local wine cellars date back to 14th century and offer wine-tasting, a museum of Czech wine-making and an exhibition of baby prams. A lovely view on the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers. A charnel house in the crypts of SS Peter and Paul’s Church, which is open to the public.
- Botanicus Gardens in Ostrá – gardens established and developed since 1999 on an area of 22 hectares, including cuisine, culinary, monastery and Chinese gardens. A medieval village with theme arts and crafts workshops.
- Poděbrady – a possible birth place of King George of Poděbrady. A castle with a museum, an extraordinary equestrian monument of George of Poděbrady by B. Schnirch. Mineral water spa, many entertainment and sports opportunities.
- A collection of vernacular houses of Central Polabí in Přerov nad Labem – the first open-air museum in the Czech lands (1900) and the fourth oldest open-air museum in Europe, depicting the life and the homes of the inhabitants of Central Polabí from the 18th century to the 1950s. Nine buildings with interior exhibitions, accompanying events.
- Chateau Veltrusy – a Baroque summer residence set amidst a large English park with romantic buildings and fallow deer game preserve. There is a convenient cycling path built in the park.
