Slovácko Area

This area of vineyards, ancient pilgrimage sites and excellent regional cuisine on the borders of both Austria and Slovakia is unique for its folk customs. Its constituent parts, namely Horňácko, Moravské Kopanice, Dolňácko and Podluží, differ in many ways. They all have their own distinctive folk costumes, customs, folk songs, music and literature. You can see all the individual parts of the Slovácko region in one place at the open-air museum in Strážnice where there’s also a cloth printing workshop.

While some are enchanted by folk celebrations and festivals, others prefer to embark on cruises along the Baťa Canal, some short, some lasting several days. Others still like to enjoy cycling and hiking trips into the Ždánický Forest, the Chřiby Hills and the White Carpathians or do a spot of sightseeing in interesting places. And you’ll find plenty of those here including the Baroque chateau in Milotice, the mysterious cellars once belonging to the Knights Templar in Čejkovice, the Great Moravian Empire-era fort at Mikulčice and the impressive wine cellars gracing many a Slovácko village.

Museum of the Southeast Moravian Village in Strážnice – At this open-air museum in Strážnice you can see the dwellings people in southeast Moravia once inhabited. There’s also a cloth printing workshop, wine cellars, a press with its original equipment still intact and a demonstration vineyard, the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic.

Baťa Canal – This piece of industrial heritage appeared alongside the River Morava between 1934 and 1938 and was used for freight and irrigation purposes. The canal is navigable for 65km from Kroměříž to Hodonín and visitors can take regular sightseeing cruises or hire boats at hire centres in Babice, Spytihněv and Strážnice.

White Carpathians – This protected area, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, has many rare habitats such as the nature reserves at Čertoryje and Jazevčí. The highest peak is Velká Javořina (970m).

Hodonín Spa – The basic source of the cure here is mineral water rich in iodine and bromide, sometimes compared to water from the Dead Sea. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and healing effects, it is used mainly in the treatment of muscular-skeletal and circulatory ailments. The spa also offers relaxation breaks.
