Moravian Karst and surroundings

A Romantic karst area with gorgeous landscapes and more than a thousand caves invites visitors to discover the fragile beauty of the underground world and subterranean streams. Marked tourist trails run through blooming meadows and rocky valleys, around the Jedovnicke ponds, windmills and ironworks in the Josefov valley, and in the shade of ancient castles and gardens surrounding lovely chateaux.

The area’s beautiful, healthy countryside is an ideal destination for outdoor trips and sports: hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing, swimming, biking, mountain climbing or horse riding. Visit one of the four famous caves; discover beautiful Baroque churches designed by famous architects in Sloup and Křtiny; and explore the “iron routes”, a testimony to the fact that iron processing has been a crucial industry in the area since the Middle Ages. The Renaissance Chateau in Blansko houses an interesting exhibition on the history of the local ironworks, revealing many surprising items which may be made from seemingly ordinary iron.

  • Blansko – a town museum with permanent exhibitions on the history of the town, the Moravian Karst, and the art of cast iron. Klamovka – former ironworks, a technological monument and an exhibition hall of the Blansko cast iron art.
  • Boskovice – a historic urban preserve with a well-preserved Jewish ghetto and synagogue. An Empire style chateau with gardens; the romantic ruin of Boskovice Castle, offering a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. A Wild West town offering various cultural events.
  • Old Ironworks in the Josefov Valley – the oldest blast furnace in Central Europe, built in the 18th century, and the first technological preserve of the Czech Republic (established in 1971). Exhibition of the iron industry and a museum of blast furnaces. Educational trail.
  • Křtiny – one of the most beautiful sacral buildings in the Czech Republic; a monumental pilgrimage site with the Holy Name of Mary Church, St. Anne’s Chapel and a cloister, designed by architect G. Santini. The temple has a Greek cross layout, the center and limb ends of which form the centers of interwoven circular sections.
  • Chateau Lysice – a chateau with period interiors and rich collections of furniture, porcelain, paintings and weaponry. A French garden with an original column colonnade; a collection of hand-painted shooting targets; exhibition of historic toys.
  • Rájec nad Svitavou – a manor house inspired by the Louis XVI style of architecture; a court of honor with a French garden; with an English-style garden surrounding the premises. The Salm Gallery; collection of Mannerist crystal goblets; an Empire-style library.
  • Rudice – a restored 19th century windmill. A museum with exhibitions covering various areas, such as the history of metallurgy and mining industry in Rudice. Near the mill there is a geological park with examples of rocks from the Moravian Karst. The Rudice swallow hole, an interesting natural phenomenon, is located nearby.
  • Rudka u Kunštátu – an artificial cave of the Blaník knights, containing sculptures of St. Wenceslas and the Blaník knights, created by local artist S. Rolínek. A forest park with sculpture decorations in the vicinity; Burian lookout tower above the cave on Milenka Hill.
  • The Punkva Caves and the Macocha Abyss – the most popular cave of the Moravian Karst with rich dripstone decorations. Guided tours through the bottom of the 140-meter-deep Macocha Abyss. Boat rides on the subterranean Punkva River. A cableway to the top of the abyss, scenic bridges.
  • Kateřinská cave, Sloupsko-šošůvské caves and Balcarka cave – another underground section of the Moravian Karst that is open to the public; unique dripstone decorations; important archeological excavation sites; educational trails and exhibitions.
