Lužice Mountains and Ještěd ridge

The long history of this mountain region can be felt at every step and in every sight, such as when looking at the delicate crystal of precious chandeliers from Kamenický Šenov. The glittering reflections of the crystal seem to have permeated the entire region, a land of impenetrable border forests which turned into a cultural landscape thanks to perceptive and sensitive formation by human hands.

But there are places and locations where nature could not be tamed; the benign lines of the Lužice Mountains are replaced by the bizarre shapes of sandstone rocks and uninterrupted forests transformed into varicolored submontane meadows with numerous groves. This is the perfect place for hiking. You can enjoy the calming greenery of the local forest when roaming the Ještěd crest with its lovely view of the Liberec basin against the background of the Jizera Mountains, Giant Mountains and Mácha’s Region. And when you are tired, you can rest in one of the local stone churches, monasteries and castles. And let us not forget one more memorable trail, the journey in the footsteps of St. Zdislava from Lemberk to Jablonné in Podještědí.

  • Grabštejn Castle – a Gothic-Renaissance castle with a cylindrical tower with a view of Three Borders (Czech Republic, Poland and Germany). The Renaissance chapel is adorned with original frescoes; the castle hosts an exhibition of the processing of precious stones and an old forge. In the dungeons the visitors can see the start of the secret passage.
  • Český Dub – the premises of the 13th century commandery of the St. John’s Order were discovered in the castle in 1991, which is a historical first in the Czech Republic. The castle also contains a Romanesque chapel, a Romanesque-Gothic hall and small convent hall. There is also a museum of Karolína Světlá situated in the town.
  • Ještěd – one of the dominant features of northern Bohemia, a hill (1012 meters) with a 90-meter television transmitter with a restaurant and a hotel. You can use a funicular from Liberec to get to Ještěd. A new ski resort with ski jumps. A view of the Orlice Mountains, Giant Mountains, Jizera Mountains and sometimes even of Petřín in Prague.
  • Kryštofovo Údolí – a village preserved in its original shape from the early 20th century. Stave, half-timbered and stone mountain houses can be found here. The valley is dominated by a 30-meter railway viaduct from 1903. Vernacular models of Nativity Scenes have been put on display in the local pub.
  • Kamenický Šenov – a town best known for its production of glass and glass art. The world’s first vocational school of glass-making was founded here in the town in 1856. The museum of glass presents the history of glass making to visitors. A traditional production of chandeliers since the 17th century, more than 40 glass workshops are operating in the town today.
  • Chateau Lemberk – a former border castle on the Žitava Trade Route, now a Baroque and Renaissance chateau. Saint Zdislava, wife of the castle founder and patron saint of the poor and the ill was perhaps the most renowned of local inhabitants. Zdislava’s spring with curative water can be found under the castle.
  • Jablonné v Podještědí – the high Baroque basilica of St. Lawrence and St. Zdislava, built at the end of the 17th century on the occasion of the beatification of Zdislava of Lemberk, whose remains are deposited in the local vault.
  • Světlá in Podještědí – the writer Karolína Světla and the wife of the local compatriot Mr. Mužák used the name of the village as her pseudonym. She regularly visited the village during the summer; she set several of her novels in the vicinity of the village.
  • Panská skála – a national natural monument, the so-called Stone Organ ranks among the best known and oldest geological reservations in the country. A natural formation of volcanic origin with 12-meter high basalt pillars. At the top of the hill there stands a ruin of a medieval castle with a lovely view of Kamenický Šenov and the surrounding hills.
  • Bredovský Castle – an early Baroque summer-house restored in a Neo-Classical summer style, a former part of Lemberk Castle. The exhibition “Lužice Mountains – Man and Nature”. A garden adorned with sculptures.
  • Sloup Rock Castle – a rock castle set on a 35-meter-high sandstone cliff. A maze of rooms, corridors and openings cut out in the rock or built on the hill. You should not miss the Stations of the Cross with a stone church and the recently restored monastic vineyard.
