Jizera Mountains

The Jizera Mountains in the north of Bohemia rank among the most beautiful tourist destinations in the Czech Republic. Mountains are beautiful in all seasons, but most visitors come in winter to ski. The most popular skiing resorts include Špičák, Bedřichov and Hrabětice. There are some 100 kilometers of tracks ready for cross-country skiers, who can also take part in the “Jizera 50” marathon. The plateau of the Jizera Mountains is also a perfect place for hiking, cycling and even wheelchair trips and trips for mothers with prams. The area is also popular among inline skating enthusiasts.

When hiking and travelling through the picturesque nature, you can appreciate the view on many of the local scenic and observation towers. In summer, you can take a rest in one of the natural open-air swimming pools. And you will not get bored even in bad weather, as the region offers many museums and galleries, and even a guided tour through local glass workshops, where you can try to make your own glass beads. And there many other types of entertainment too, such as zoological and botanical gardens, an aqua park, carting and bobsled tracks and others.

  • Jablonec nad Nisou – the gateway to the Jizera Mountains. The recently restored Museum of Glass and Jewels showcases the long local glass-making tradition. In summer you can swim and rest at the local lake or take a bike or inline skate ride. In winter you can go cross-country skiing at the illuminated skiing ground in Břízky.
  • Bedřichov – a traditional glass-making village; today a popular sports and recreational center, on the starting point of the Jizera Skiing Track (some 140 kilometers of regularly maintained cross-country tracks in the Czech part of the Jizera Mountains connected to tracks in Poland). Bedřichov is also the starting point of the traditional “Jizera 50” marathon. The village offers excellent conditions for mountain hiking and cycling; there are two ski-slope centers in the vicinity of the village.
  • Janov nad Nisou – in 2006 a new carting and bobsled track opened in the town, offering an unconventional sports activity, excellent self-service gastronomy and a playground for children – an interesting destination for family or school trips throughout the year.
  • Smržovka – a town at the southern foothills of the Jizera Mountains. A railway viaduct from 1894 – one of the most beautiful constructions of its kind in the Czech Republic and an example of an extraordinary balance between man-made structures and the natural environment. 1020-meter long racing sled tracks with a 400-degree circular curve.
  • Černá studnice Viewing Tower – or the Black Well Tower, a 26-meter-tall granite viewing tower at the summit of Black Well Ridge (869 meters), the main symbol of tourism in the Jablonec district. A private museum of natural science and a museum of local history.
  • Cycling Trail of Jára Cimmrman – one of the many cycling trails in the Tanvald Region. Follow the footsteps of an unappreciated Czech genius – 9 stops remind visitors of the Master’s life and work.
  • Jizerka Settlement – the highest-set village in the mountains sometimes called the Heart of the Jizera. It is situated at the Small Jizera Meadow and connected to the rest of the world by a regularly maintained mountain road. The dominant feature of the settlement is the highest basalt formation in Central Europe, known as Bukovec Hill (1005 meters).
  • Viewing towers of the Jizera Mountains – several stone and steel towers with a picturesque view of the environment, including the oldest steel observation tower in Bohemia – Slovanka.
  • Burst Dam – the remains of a dam incorporated in the project of flood prevention in the Jizera Mountains, today a cultural monument. The dam burst in 1916 after one year of operation. 62 people died as a result; the water completely demolished 33 house and seriously damaged 62 more houses.
  • Tanvald – Kořenov – Harrachov Railway Track – a technical cultural monument, the steepest railway track in the Czech Republic. Built between 1899 and 1902. The track follows the most picturesque areas of the Jizera Mountains and Krkonoše (Giant Mountains); its maximum elevation is 235 meters.
  • Liberec – the capital of the region. The most interesting attractions include a botanical and zoological garden, which keeps rare white tigers and the Babylon entertainment center with a unique aqua park.
