Revealing the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum
Premiere type: Monuments and history, Entertainment. We recommend for: Holidays for young people, Relaxing holiday.
Announced: July 2008
In the basements of the Italian Court in Kutná Hora, it is possible to visit a museum that reveals the mysterious and largely dark face of Kutná Hora. Here visitors will meet with criminals, witches, heretics and fire raisers, as well as their judges, jailers and executioners. In addition to these sordid characters, visitors also will learn about torture instruments, degrading practices and scaffold blocks.
The exhibition starts with a photographic display that takes a look back to the past. It approaches Kutná Hora from different points of view and thereby also shows the hidden corners of the old town.
Another part of the exhibition presents the dark side of the town’s face and examines the real core of crime in Kutná Hora, and thereby the “Manual on the Right to Torture”. The exhibition refers to both well known and less well known criminals who were active right here and, through interesting stories, reveals their crimes and subsequent detection all the way through to their punishment, including torture. In addition to these stories, there are interesting pictures and instruments of torture and punishment.
The era of the Hussites also was a time of crime, and Kutná Hora during this period became almost a genuine symbol of evil in the eyes of heretics, which is dealt with in another part of the exhibition. Also presented at the exhibition are fables connected with Kutná Hora, but once again connected with the theme of dishonest behaviour.
