Extending the exhibition “The Story of Coronations” at Prague Castle
Premiere type: Monuments and history. We recommend for: Holidays with children, Holidays for young people, Relaxing holiday.
Announced: June 2008
The permanent exhibition “The Story of Prague Castle” now has new exhibits in the thematic section entitled “The Story of Coronations”. To date, this part of the exhibition has documented the coronations of sovereigns of the Přemyslid, Luxembourg and Jagiellon dynasties in the territory of the Czech state in the Middle Ages. The new part deals with the modern period after the Hapsburgs took over the throne.
The exhibition presents, in chronological order, the most important state ceremonies that took place at Prague Castle, along with the monuments concerned with the respective period, thereby presenting all in its logical entirety. Initially, the medieval coronations were displayed; these are now followed by the more modern coronations with the aim of returning the Hapsburgs and their times to Czech public consciousness.
A total of 13 new exhibits have been added, the most interesting of which is the original coronation throne, displayed to visitors for the first time ever. The throne was kept in the collections of Prague castle, but its purpose was forgotten over time. The coronation throne was made in the late 18th century in Vienna. It is collapsible and was used at any place where the Hapsburgs conducted any ceremonies.
In addition to the valuable throne, the exhibition includes copies of the coronation jewellery, the coronation robes and such other related mementos of coronations as decorations of the cathedral, commemorative medals and other pictorial materials.
