Podorlický Open-Air Museum at Krňovice
Premiere type: Monuments and history. We recommend for: Holidays with children, Holidays for young people, Relaxing holiday.
Announced: April 2008
The Podorlický Open-Air Museum at Krňovice lies in the neighbourhood of the Orlice Nature Park near Třebechovice pod Orebem. Its beginnings go back to 2002, at which time the first building was begun. In the grounds of this museum, you will find folk architecture, historical machines and appliances seen in the homes of village- and towns-people in the Hradec Králové and Orlice Foothills areas.
The buildings have either been transported from their original locations, where they were threatened with destruction, or well-preserved buildings were reconstructed (according to documentary evidence, historical purpose and photographic documentation). Visitors are thus provided a comparison of how historical buildings of past centuries were used and built, and how they looked at the time of their origin. Only building materials typical of the regional architecture have been used – wood, argillite (mudstone) and brick in assorted combinations. Wood was not only used for the construction of timbered houses, it was also the principal building material for constructing barns, roof frames and all the technological equipment (e.g. grain mills, sawmills and others). Argillite was, for centuries, a typical regional material for walling and can still be seen in the region to the present day. Also present are examples of period crafts, machines and work tools essential to life in earlier generations. Examples include a functioning horse engine, stationary petrol and electric motors, and many other agricultural machines.
Around the rural buildings in the grounds, there have been established orchards of native and regional fruit tree varieties and small ancillary structures (e.g. for drying fruit). In the centre of Krňovice, one may admire an historical ice house from the time when ice was cut on the Orlice River. It had served to keep ice throughout the year. In nearby Třebechovice pod Orebem, visitors are welcome at the nativity museum, with its famous wooden provost’s mechanical nativity scene.
